Made in the USA

Freefly designs, builds, assembles, tests, and supports the Astro in Woodinville, WA, USA. When you fly an Astro, you are flying field-proven, American-made engineering. It is a relentlessly perfected drone built by people who truly understand their product.

Designed for Compatibility

Freefly is setting the new standard for commercial drone ecosystems by sharing open architecture that guarantees maximum compatibility. As a result, Freefly controllers, quick releases, and gimbals are used extensively across the industry.

Tested for Absolute Reliability

Freefly drones carry the world’s most advanced sensors, and they are tested accordingly. During the development of the Astro, engineering teams completed over 200 rigorous test plans—spanning structural endurance, extreme environmental exposure, electrical stress, and material fatigue. With more than 1,000 hours of real-world flight and simulated testing logged before launch, every component is proven to withstand aggressive maneuvers and harsh field conditions, ensuring your high-value payloads are always in safe hands.

Engineered for Aerial Precision and Performance

Propellers

Achieving maximum flight time requires the largest propellers available. The Freefly Astro pushes this limit by mounting massive 21 inch propellers on a compact 14 inch square body. Increasing propeller size typically makes it much more difficult to accelerate and decelerate the blades, which is exactly why nimble FPV drones rely on the smallest propellers possible. Freefly solved this challenge by spending years developing specialized motor drive hardware and advanced control algorithms. This technology allows their very large and slow spinning propellers to operate with incredible stability. As a result, the Astro delivers extended flight times, pinpoint precision, and a remarkably low noise footprint.

Batteries

The Astro utilizes advanced 21700 round cell lithium ion battery technology through the Freefly SuperLight SL8 battery platform. As the industry releases new cell chemistry, Freefly integrates those advancements directly into the SL8 system. Each battery features an OLED screen, comprehensive protections, detailed diagnostics, and an integrated USB C port to easily power your accessories out in the field. Safety and reliability are heavily prioritized in this design. The Astro can safely sustain flight on a single battery if a pack fails during an operation, and Freefly backs the hardware with a guarantee of 500 charge cycles. To complete the ecosystem, data for each pack is stored seamlessly within the Auterion Suite to allow for easy fleet tracking and performance analysis.

Smart Dovetail

The Smart Dovetail was engineered by Freefly to establish a standardized interface for payload manufacturers. This innovative design ensures that any compliant payload can operate seamlessly on any compliant drone within the ecosystem. Being able to effortlessly swap payloads across an entire drone fleet maximizes operational efficiency. It guarantees that teams always have the right tools ready to get the job done.

RTK Precision

GPS satellites orbit 12,550 miles above the Earth's surface. Despite this incredible distance, the Astro utilizes an advanced ublox F9p receiver to lock onto more than 20 satellites simultaneously, achieving a remarkably stable hover in even the windiest conditions. If a mission demands absolute pinpoint positioning, adding the Freefly RTK base station increases that baseline accuracy tenfold. Pilots can take full advantage of this extreme precision using the unique velocity clamps on the Pilot Pro controller, which allow them to adjust maximum flight speeds in real time. This means an operator can cruise an inspection site at high speeds and then instantly click into a slower mode to make minute positional adjustments at just 0.1 m/s. It is a seamless integration of tracking and control that makes the Astro exceptionally fast, precise, and adaptable.
